Panasonic RP-HJE900 Zirconia Earphones

Panasonic will be releasing its new pair of earphones known as the RP-HJE900 on June 15th in Japan. What makes this pair different from the rest in the market is the use of zirconia, a material often associated with the manufacturing of fake diamonds. Apparently zirconia suppresses sound distortion, or so the story goes. Sound pressure sensitivity has been rated to fall in the vicinity of 100dB/mW, with a frequency response of 6Hz–28 KHz accompanying each purchase. To add to the RP-HJE900’s uniqueness, it boasts removable cables, making it a whole lot easier to stow away without ending up with a tangled mess when you need it. No idea on how much it costs though.

Psystar Open Computer Revised

Psystar has revised its Open Computer, doing away with its negatives of the past where fan noise is one of the main culprits. This new iteration sees a much quieter machine, and another notable improvement is the inclusion of a NVIDIA GeForce 7200GS 256MB graphics card that makes this a decent portable casual gaming notebook. Thankfully unlike global oil prices, the Psystar Open Computer will still retail for $399, although you will need to fork out another $155 if you plan to have Leopard pre-installed on the system.

eMagin Z800 3D visor

eMagin Corporation decided to make a huge splash at the Society for Information Display Conference and Exhibition (SID 2008) at the Los Angeles Convention Center by introducing its most recent OLED microdisplays, including the pretty nifty Z800 3DVisor. This futuristic device will rely on a couple of power-efficient OLED microdisplays, giving the wearers a 3D equivalent of a 105″ display viewed from 12 feet away - sounds pretty awesome since it is pretty impossible for the average Joe to just purchase a 105″ flat panel display at his whim and fancy these days, considering just how low the dollar is along with more pressing issues to attend to instead of mulling over purchasing a brand new TV. While the potential use of the Z800 3DVisor is manifold, I would say the gaming community will definitely warm up to it readily - after all, who wouldn’t want to experience big screen gaming despite living in a cramped living room?

The Z800 3DVisor relies on a USB connection to power it, integrated two SVGA 3D OLED microdisplays along with stereo audio for that perfect entertainment package. The fun doesn’t stop there though as each $1,499 purchase will be accompanied by a noise canceling microphone and a high-speed headtracker that offers full 360-degree virtual-surround viewing. Owners will be pleased to know that the money dropped for the Z800 won’t be in vain, since it shares the same technology as the OLED displays used in the US Army Land Warrior program, delivering high-speed, 800 x 600 triad pixels resolution in over 16.7 million colors. It is smart enough to recognize and deliver left-eye and right-eye stereovision signals, eliminating flicker and smear by buffeting color data under each pixel site.

Not only that, the Z800 3Dvisor is compatible with PCs that can produce an analog SVGA resolution at 800 x 600 pixels, along with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Hopefully future iterations will be able to support higher resolutions.

Disney, Sharp intro the Cinderella-themed DM002SH

This may be a ridiculous idea to some, but we have to admit that for others, Walt Disney is such a cult that would merit its own mobile phone model. Hence, Walt Disney has partnered up with Sharp to develop a Disney-inspired mobile handset. Don’t even think of protesting against the idea, as both companies are about to launch the new mobile phone, dubbed as the DM002SH on June 7 in Japan.

And what a better way to launch the said Disney phone but to pour in some good old Cinderella content into it? Cute? Well, that’s not to say that the DM002SH is nothing but cutesy Disney stuff, as the phone is also packed with some basic features including a 2.6-inch internal display with WQVGA resolution, a 0.5-inch external OLED display, 50MB of internal memory, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD slot and 1Seg Tuner. In addition the DM002SH will also use the Disney Mobility service which is available with Softbank in Japan.

No pricing details are available yet, but we know for sure that this mobile phone will come in Clear Crystal, Brown Topaz and Pink Diamond colors.

Britain’s Prime Minister invites questions via Youtube

I always encourage people to embrace the opportunities for communication that new technologies have opened up: from VOIP to IM, cell phones to voicemail, blogging to social networking, I’m all over it, all of it.

But there are some people who you would think would have better things to do with their time. So whilst I admire the initiative behind Gordon Brown’s idea to answer questions from the British public over YouTube (politicians should be more accountable, not to mention more adept when it comes to new technology) I can’t help thinking this could be an invitation to disaster - surely the admin involved will be an organizational nightmare?

Still, any Brits who are less cynical than myself have until June 21st to submit questions via the Downing Street YouTube channel. And I must admit it seems a better use of the Internet than the web camera of opposition leader David Cameron - watching a politician eat breakfast isn’t high on my list of priorities…

What do you think - should politicians stick to what they know, or try to attract the technophile vote?

German woman auctions baby on eBay

The German police have started an investigation after a German woman decided to put her 8 month-old baby up for auction on eBay. The listing read:

Baby — collection only. Offer my nearly new baby for sale because it cries too much. Male, 70 cm long.

The woman in question is a 23 year-old from Krumbach, Munich and has told German newspaper the Bild that the whole thing was a joke, she said:

It was only a joke. I just wanted to see if someone would make an offer. They’ve taken my son to hospital and I’ve got to take psychiatric tests next week.

The sale was highlighted to the local police after a number of eBay users in Germany saw the auction and contacted the authorities. The investigation is set to continue regardless of the mother saying it was a joke to ensure no child trading was taking place.

For the moment the child has been taken into care by the state and the mother will have to undergo a series of tests to ensure she is fit to continue care of the child.

The auction was active on eBay for a total of 2 hours and received no bids at the starting price of 1 euro (US$1.57).

Matthew’s Opinion

I really don’t see how such an action could be seen as a joke by anyone, let alone the mother of the child. A joke also usually involves multiple people who can laugh at the joke, but at the moment it just looks like the mother acting alone. Either this is a much more serious and stupid attempt to sell the baby, or the mother really needs help if she considers such actions as amusing.

It was the concern of other users that got the auction removed and followed-up by the authorities. If no one had acted how long would eBay have let the auction run? I realise there are thousands of auctions being started every hour, but a need to control what goes up for auction is highlighted in this case.

RAmos reveals Blue Magic T8 PMP

by Darren Murph, posted May 27th 2008 at 5:24AMJust in case you felt there wasn’t quite enough screen real estate on the ultra-sleek V8, RAmos is giving the display even more attention on the Blue Magic T8. The player features a 4.3-inch display, 10-millimeter thick enclosure, built-in FM radio tuner and the potential to play nice with a not-yet-developed dock that would enable video output. Beyond that, details are freakishly scarce, so it looks like you’ll have to put away your excitement for the time being.
