Customizable cell phones announced

We all know that cell phones are dime a dozen, and basically everyone I know has one. I suppose only the retired segment of the population couldn’t care less about new features that are introduced with each generation of handsets, but a cell phone is an essential item for today and no longer considered to be a luxury gadget to have. While phone manufacturers have been pushing a whole bunch of handsets down our throats with each quarter (remember back in the good old days where Nokia released just a couple of handsets each year?), there are a couple of companies who have decided that the consumer should be the one who chooses what they want to see inside each handset instead of getting features which they don’t want/need.

First off we have Modu from Israel who rolled out a GSM handset that will be released this October, coming in the form of a tiny phone which can slide into special “jackets” that are actually phone exteriors with extra functionality. Not only that, you get software which instructs the phone about special color schemes in addition to other features. Imagine needing to snap a photo with your Modu at that moment, where you will slide in a camera “jacket” only to take it off and replace it with a QWERTY keyboard “jacket” whenever you don your business suit. The company is also working on other jackets that aren’t phone-based including GPS devices. Sounds like a dream, but do you actually want to carry different “jackets” with you wherever you go or one handset that has already everything packed inside?

zzzPhone is banking on its build-to-order phone business model, claiming that you order a cell phone in pretty much the same way one orders PC from Dell. Head over to its website, select your desired features and the customized version will be sent to your doorstep. A base model retails for $149, where you can throw in extras such as a 7-megapixel camera, TV tuner or GPS module for extra dough.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CX: Game Joy micro

We’ve seen a couple fake Game Boy micros in the past, but none of them have been as faithful reproductions as this one here. Sadly, we’ve got little to go on as far as games or other functions in this “Game Joy micro,” but it looks like at least Tetris is a shoo-in, which is really all that matters. Check after the break for a few other gems of fakery.

Lego is cool and Super Mario is too and bringing these two entities together gives us a very hot mashup. Watch it before the YouTube fun police take it down for whichever Terms of Service violation they can imagine.

Five Device Recharging Station

As a Geek, perhaps you have the same issue as I do. You see, gadgets require power to charge up and the more gadgets you collect and use, the harder it is to find places to plug-in all your gadgets so when you’re running out the door in the morning to sit in traffic you don’t forget you Treo, Blackberry, iPods, etc… Combine this with multiple people in your house and every socket in your kitchen is in use! Wouldn’t it be great for cable organization so your gadget resting place looks as nice and neat as your wiring closet only you see in the basement?

The Five Device Recharging Station is a recharging platform that, go figures, stores and recharges up to five devices from one convenient place with four integrated AC ports and two USB ports. It’s perfect to charge all your devices and hide the tangled wires.

Ah Hokkaido, the distant icy cold north of Japan that I have yet to visit. It is famous for bears, vast expanses of space, freezing cold and of course the annual snow festival. The following photo is taken by a Kotaku reader by the name of Ryan. The sculpture is to commemorate thirty years of Space Invaders.

Melbourne restaurant Attica serves up a number of exquisite dishes with “fresh smoke” courtesy of a piece of equipment that is usually the domain of teenage stoner misfits. A battery-powered bong is used to draw smoke from burning cedar and hickory chips into a plastic bag with food. The plastic bag is then sealed and placed in the refrigerator for a period of about twenty minutes. Fresh smoke is trapped in a stemless wine glass which is placed over the food for serving. According to Ben Shewry, the chef behind this innovative idea, “This works on three senses: they see the smoke in the glass, they smell it as it wafts out and then they taste it.”

Despite the unusual choice of cooking equipment, thirty-year-old Shewry is anti-drugs and not entirely comfortable with his knowing about his use of drug paraphernalia as a cooking implement. “Who wants the word ‘bong’ on a menu?” asked Shewry.

iWave Cube, the personal portable microwave

There comes the time in every young person’s life where they decide to graduate from the microwave to the stove. And fail miserably. Now instead of retreating dejectedly back to the kitchen microwave, where the rest of the appliances can point and make fun, you can hide your shame with the iWave Cube. The little microwave measures one cubic foot (about the size of a Kleenex box), and weighs just 12 pounds. Unfortunately, you’ll still need to plug it in, so there’s a limit to how far you can run. The iWave Cube comes in black, red or silver, and retails for $130.

Microsoft asks Nokia to introduce Windows Mobile OS compatible phones

Microsoft has realized that to retain its all-pervading status in the world of software, it will not suffice producing systems software and software that would run on PCs. The advent of high-end mobile technologies is carrying the operating system from the desktops to the mobile handsets. This is the reason why Microsoft is trying to convince Nokia, the world leader in mobile phone industry to release handsets that use Windows Mobile OS in addition to Nokia’s Symbian platform. Now it remains to be seen whether Nokia accepts the proposals from Microsoft and releases a new series incorporating Windows Mobile OS.

Nikon’s S600 rounds out the new Coolpix lineup

We’re not how it slipped by before, but Nikon’s got one more in its new S-series Coolpix cameras, the S600. The 10 megapixel camera bests the recently-announced S550 with a 2.7-inch LCD, 3200 ISO and optical image stabilization, but cuts the zoom to 4x and jacks the price to $299. The camera will be available in March.
